As development from my previous post on the Colosseum shape development combined with the reverse applique technique I cut out a sample of the Colosseum in calico fabric, one printed and the other plain as I wanted to experiment with engraving on the fabric. I had previously experimented with the flowers however the chiffon fabrics were too fine, so hopefully a thicker fabric would work better.

I created the image by tracing over the shape on illustrator, with the outline of the architecture, the window outlines, and the shadow outlines. I then turned this into two layers the top one contained the main front of the colosseum with the windows cut out and engravings of the details of the walls, the second layer was cut outs of the shadows of the windows.

After the calico sample was created I decided to add a third layer as part of the practicality of the garment.

In the sample I really liked the shape of the piece and that it flows into a backless garment . As well as the shadow layer of it in the printed piece really makes it look 3D and flow around the body. As part of the design I wanted these romantic flowered to be embellished from the waistline onto the skirt.

Over all I like the fit and style of the piece so I will add this into my garment toile, and see the fit on my model. below is a video of the laser cutter cutting out the image into calico.
